Location & Travel

The Western Isles are a chain of islands off the north west coast of Scotland. Stornoway on the island of Lewis is the largest town and has all the leisure facilities of a modern town. Although Stornoway Golf Club is the only 18-hole course on Lewis, there is a fine 9-hole course at Scarista in Harris. Additionally there is an 18 hole course at Askernish South Uist and 9-hole courses at Sollas North Uist, Benbecula and Barra that are well distributed geographically throughout the length of the islands to provide the travelling golfer a variety of challenges with scenery that will take the breath away.

Ferry Details

Stornoway is served by Caledonian Macbrayne who operate the modern roll-on/roll-off car and passenger ferry ‘Isle of Lewis’ from Ullapool, which is just one hour’s drive from Inverness. There are two or three return trips from Monday to Saturday depending on the time of year.

Ferries to the other islands sail from Uig in Skye, Mallaig and Oban. Special packages include the Island Hopscotch – a choice of pre-planned routes for cars and accompanying passengers, and the Island Rover – a runabout ticket with or without a car and which is valid for 8 or 15 days with unlimited travel on most routes.

Flight Details

The following scheduled air services operate from the airport:

Aberdeen – Eastern Airways
Benbecula – FlyBe/Loganair

The course at Stornoway Golf Club is set amongst the woodlands of Lews Castle and rises out of these towards the moorlands to the west of the town. An undulating landscape presents the golfer with a course that demands a keen shot-making ability and a canny judgement  of distances.

Western Isles County Championship 2026

An unexpected sunny day in Stornoway yesterday saw nearly 80 competitors in the Mens, Ladies and Junior Western Isles County Championship

It was great to see some visitors from Harris in the mens and ladies competition with the course in impressive condition 🤩

There was some fantastic golf to be seen with the mens and Ladies scratch competition both going to a 3 hole play off.

Scott and DJ both carded fantastic scores of gross 66, which included a 6th on the 18th for DJ after 17 great holes 🤦🏻‍♀️.

An evening play off between the 2 saw some more brilliant golf from both with an eagle on the 2nd the difference, with DJ having a birdie and they both had par on the other 2 holes, great performances by both

Well done to Scott who wins his first Mens WI County Champion, he tells me his last scratch win in the club was the Thomson Bruce in 2000 😳😅😂 🏆⛳️👍

The mens Handicap Competition was won by Dave Gilmour who had great nett 64 👏🏻👍

In the ladies it was great to see 7 ladies in the competition, I should have just stayed in the shop 😅🤷🏻‍♀️

Thankfully the rest of the ladies performed well with Molly and Penny carding gross 85, so another evening playoff was required.

The midges didn’t put them off and Molly kept her nerve to see off Penny.

Well done to Molly the Ladies WI County Champion, I can guarantee this will be the first of many 🤩💪 ⛳️🏆

The ladies handicap competition was also very close with Penny pipping Susan on the backward count, both 1 shot ahead of Liz 😅

The Junior Competition saw the usual battle with the younger Macleod sisters with Amber the New Junior WI County Championship and Paige winning the Handicap section.
