JOHNSONS POST A VERY TIMELY WARNING
My apologies for the truncated golf notes this week, my partner and I decided to try a new approach. He sent me to the mainland over the weekend to see if I could buy a swing, and I left him to compete on his own and to see if he could “do an Arthur”.
He suggested Toys’R’Us, for a swing to suit me, and I believe he modelled his game on the late Dudley Moore, having misunderstood what I meant.
Scoring their first points since before Christmas, the Johnson twins, Murdo and Magnus managed to put some (clearer) daylight between themselves and their nearest challengers on the penultimate Saturday of the Winter league. Having seen their eleven point lead whittled down to but one by Iain”Todd” MacKenzie & Donald “Zebo” Macleod, they must have dreaded going to “the wire” next week with such a narrow lead, and with the possibility of several teams scooping enough points to overtake them.
Their five point haul last weekend gives them a six point cushion at the top, and with but seven (the “several” mentioned above is exactly seven by my calculations) teams still mathematically able to win the league , another display of grit akin to the one displayed at this crucial stage , next week, should be enough to retain their title.
With the weather again having threatened to scupper the golf last weekend, hopefully we can witness an exciting finish, in decent conditions, and with all the main players in good form on Saturday.
I will make no predictions either way.
Winners on the day were Peter Dickie and Stewart MacDonald with another fine display in tricky conditions. Their excellent nett 41 pipped three teams into second place; but with only the leaders out of the top group scoring, many of the teams amongst the points on Saturday will rue their late run into form.
Can I remind everyone that the annual subscriptions are now due, and that the entry forms for this year’s Match Play competitions are posted on the notice boards.
Remember the fees must be paid before your name goes into the draw, and the closing date is 12th April.
From the Legends section… (I like the way they are trying to introduce a “dress code” for vehicles in the car park. These guys have higher standards indeed. I’ve already started saving for my entry into the seniors….possibly another “rash” prediction.
Normal conditions (i.e. wind and rain) persisted for most of the week and activity was restricted to seven cards on Wednesday. Seniors can find no compelling reason to be hitting golf balls into the teeth of a gale at the Glen when they could be sitting by the fireside doing something useful…..like dozing.
The course benefited from ten dry days a fortnight ago but all that seems to have been undone with the past week’s rain.
Best score was 24 points from D.J. (Zebo) Macleod, the island’s latest tweed baron. Someone should have a word with him about arriving in the car park in a White Van. Not really the done thing at better golf clubs.
Again, there are no changes to report at the top of the League Table.
