Weather almost spoils Golf Finals Day
Once again, a superb Golf week came to a close last Saturday with all the major honours decided in the finals on Friday.
The weather, yet again, was almost the winner on Friday as the heavens opened late morning with what can only be described as monsoon conditions, the closed sign was up again but thankfully it only lasted a short while before the sun came out and the course re-opened in time for all the finalists to tee off at their allocated time slots.
As predicted, Neil Rowlands was always going to be a threat in the mens scratch competition and he took the trophy but not without a struggle against Bryan Geddes who put up a great fight and must be contender of the future as predicted by Neil himself in his address to the club members at the presentation ceremony on Friday evening.
In the handicap final it was Ken Macdonald who won against Peter O’Brien in another tightly contested match with Ken winning 2 and 1.
The ladies final could have landed another trophy on the Macdonald mantelpiece as Rita played Jan Maclennan but Jan’s play was too good on this occasion and a deserved winner.
We are accustomed to seeing the name Macritchie in the finals on a regular basis and with Colin away in Rhodes it was up to Iain Macritchie to make sure the family was represented in the finals this year as he took on and beat Donald John Mackay with just two holes to play.
The juniors was won by Scott Macaulay who has been seen being putting in a lot of practice recently as he won his match by 4 and 3.
Saturday’s competition saw the usual missing starts as the dance on Friday night was enjoyed by many and a few felt that a well deserved rest would be the order of the day and others who did make it felt that a full round was beyond them so an early exit to the clubhouse was called for but who could blame them, have you ever tried playing a round of golf every day for a week, this correspondent tried it once but has been unable to fulfil this so well done everyone who managed it.
All in all, the matches were very close and congratulations to all the winners during the week and especially to the visitors and we look forward to welcoming you again next year.
Friday evening saw the usual barbecue prior to the presentations and thanks are due to the bar staff for their efforts. The annual raffle had four prizewinners( 1st,Emma Macsween,2nd Norrie 'Eggs' Mackenzie,3rd,Mari Maciver,Captain's mystery prize,Trixi Macaulay).
